The police asked me what I am doing. I look suspicious. I am taking photographs, I said. I take photographs that should not upset anybody. I take photographs of buildings, of street corners, of tires discarded in the desert.

Oh, said the policeman, and he left me with my camera. It's a digital camera and I work the images into something I love with the computer. I don't use artistic Photoshop filters. I like realism, only darkened and sepia toned. For a place with a lot of sun - southern New Mexico, USA - my photographs are dark. I am not sure the policeman would have understood or appreciated my inner darkness forced outward on a world of nearly constant sunshine.

La policía me preguntó que qué hacía. Me veo sospechoso. Estoy tomando fotos, dije. Tomo fotografías que no ofenden a nadie. Tomo fotografías de edificios, de las esquinas de las calles, de neumáticos abandonados en el desierto.

Ah, dijo el policía, y me dejó con mi cámara. Es una cámara digital y transformo las imágenes con la computadora en cosas que amo. No utilizo los filtros artísticos de Photoshop. Me gusta el realismo, oscurecido y con tonos sepia. Mis fotografías son oscuras para un lugar con tanto sol como el sur de Nuevo México. No estoy seguro de que el policía hubiera entendido o apreciado mi oscuridad interior volcada hacia un mundo de luz constante.
